Find Your Perfect Strain: The Recommendation Quiz
How our strain recommendation quiz matches your preferences to ideal strains using effects, flavors, experience level, and growing interest.
Table of Contents
With over 50,874 strains in our database, finding the right one can feel overwhelming. Whether you are a medical patient looking for specific therapeutic effects, a recreational user exploring new flavors, or a grower planning your next cultivation cycle, the sheer volume of options demands a better approach than scrolling through endless listings. That is why we built the Strain Recommendation Quiz β an intelligent matching system that narrows 50,000+ strains down to a personalized shortlist based on your specific preferences, needs, and circumstances.
How the Quiz Works
The quiz is a guided conversation between you and our matching algorithm. Over a series of focused questions, you provide information about what you are looking for in a strain. The algorithm processes your answers against our entire database, scoring each strain on how well it matches your criteria, and returns a ranked list of recommendations with explanations for why each strain was selected.
The entire process takes about two to three minutes. No account is required. Your answers are processed client-side and are not stored or tracked β privacy is fundamental to our design.
The Questions
Each question in the quiz targets a specific dimension of strain compatibility:
Desired Effects
This is the most heavily weighted factor in our matching algorithm. You select from categories of effects: relaxation, euphoria, creativity, energy, focus, pain relief, sleep aid, appetite stimulation, and more. The algorithm matches your selections against our 240-effect taxonomy and the 89,350+ strain-effect relationships in our database.
You can select multiple effects, and the algorithm treats each as a preference signal with diminishing priority β your first selection matters most, but secondary selections still influence the results. If you select "relaxing" and "creative," the algorithm prioritizes strains documented as producing both effects, followed by strains strong in one category.
Flavor Preferences
Flavor is the second major matching dimension. Our 405 flavor profiles cover the full spectrum of cannabis aromas and tastes β from classic "earthy" and "skunky" to complex profiles like "tropical mango," "diesel," "lavender," and "blueberry." You select flavor families that appeal to you, and the algorithm weights strains with matching terpene compositions.
Flavor matching also serves as a proxy for terpene content, which is increasingly understood to influence the entourage effect β the synergistic interaction between cannabinoids and terpenes that shapes the overall experience. By selecting flavors, you are indirectly guiding the algorithm toward specific terpene profiles.
Experience Level
This question calibrates the potency range of recommendations. For newcomers or low-tolerance users, the algorithm deprioritizes high-THC strains and favors balanced or CBD-rich options with documented gentle onsets. For experienced users, the full potency spectrum is available. This question does not exclude strains β it adjusts the ranking to put appropriate options at the top.
Medical Needs
An optional question for users seeking therapeutic benefits. If you indicate specific medical goals β pain management, anxiety relief, sleep improvement, inflammation reduction, nausea control β the algorithm applies medical matching logic that factors in cannabinoid ratios, documented medical effects from user reports, and terpene compositions associated with therapeutic outcomes. This draws on the same data that powers our Medical Strain Finder.
Note: Quiz results for medical needs are informational only and do not constitute medical advice. Consult a healthcare professional for medical decisions.
Growing Interest
If you are interested in cultivating your recommended strains, this question adds growing parameters to the matching criteria. You can specify indoor or outdoor growing, your experience level as a grower, and your climate zone. The algorithm then factors in flowering time, growing difficulty, yield potential, and climate suitability when ranking recommendations.
This is particularly useful for users who want strains they can both enjoy and successfully grow β combining consumption preferences with practical cultivation reality.
Type Preference
While the indica/sativa distinction is increasingly understood as an oversimplification, many users still have preferences based on their experience. The quiz allows you to indicate a preference for indica-leaning, sativa-leaning, balanced hybrid, or "no preference" options. When selected, strain type serves as a soft filter β influencing ranking rather than hard-excluding results.
The Algorithm Behind Recommendations
Our matching algorithm is not a simple filter system. It is a multi-criteria scoring engine that evaluates every strain in the database against your input profile and produces a relevance score for each.
Scoring Methodology
Each strain receives a score from 0 to 100 based on weighted criteria:
- Effect match (40%): How closely do the strain's documented effects align with your desired effects? This uses our 89,350+ strain-effect relationships, weighted by the confidence score of each relationship.
- Flavor match (20%): How well do the strain's flavor profiles match your preferences? Cross-referenced with 58,788+ strain-flavor links.
- Potency appropriateness (15%): Does the strain's THC/CBD range align with your experience level and tolerance?
- Medical relevance (15%): If medical needs are specified, how well does the strain's profile match therapeutic criteria?
- Growing suitability (10%): If growing interest is indicated, how well do the strain's cultivation characteristics match your environment and experience?
Data Quality Weighting
Strains with higher data quality scores are subtly preferred in the ranking. A well-documented strain with 15 linked effects and a quality score of 85 inspires more confidence in the match accuracy than a sparsely documented strain with 3 effects and a quality score of 30. This means our recommendations improve as our data enrichment continues.
Diversity in Results
The algorithm intentionally introduces diversity into the top results. Rather than returning ten nearly identical strains, it clusters similar options and selects representatives from different genetic families, breeders, and terpene profiles. This ensures you discover options you might not have found through manual browsing β including lesser-known strains from boutique breeders that match your criteria exceptionally well.
Understanding Your Results
Quiz results are presented as a ranked list, typically showing 5 to 10 top recommendations. Each result includes:
- Match score: A percentage indicating how well this strain matches your criteria.
- Match explanation: A brief description of why this strain was recommended β which of your desired effects it produces, which flavors align, and any relevant medical or growing characteristics.
- Strain profile link: Direct access to the full strain profile, where you can explore effects, flavors, terpenes, genetics, and user reviews in detail.
- Comparison option: Add any recommended strain to the Strain Comparison Tool to evaluate it against other options side by side.
Accuracy and User Feedback
We measure quiz effectiveness through optional post-result feedback. After trying a recommended strain, users can report whether the recommendation matched their experience. This feedback loop is valuable for two reasons: it helps us refine the matching algorithm's weighting, and it contributes to the broader community's effect validation data.
Early feedback has been encouraging. Users consistently report that quiz recommendations introduce them to strains they would not have discovered through manual browsing, and that the effect matching is notably more accurate than what they have experienced on other platforms. The depth of our underlying data β 89,350+ effect relationships across 50,874+ strains β gives the algorithm a resolution that shallower datasets cannot match.
Try It Yourself
The Strain Recommendation Quiz is free, requires no registration, and takes less than three minutes. Whether you are new to cannabis and want guidance, an experienced user looking for something new, or a grower planning your next season, the quiz provides a data-driven starting point that is more reliable than random browsing or social media recommendations.
After completing the quiz, explore your results, compare your top matches, read community reviews, and dive into the terpene profiles that define each strain's unique character. The more you explore, the more our database works for you β and the better equipped you are to make informed cannabis decisions.
